about

Propelled by its engaging and heartwarming harmonies, While We Wait is instantly reminiscent of late 1950s doo-wop and the beautiful yet confounding naivety of that era of music and politics. With the state of global affairs being so spectacularly convoluted these days, many of us may well find ourselves feeling a bit jealous of this naivety.

The pinnacle of the doo-wop era was just prior to the explosion of the global civil rights movement. Indeed, it was far easier to focus on frivolities than to talk about the heaviness of guaranteeing people's rights.

At its core, While We Wait is a comment on the duality of straddling two eras – we can not preserve this cutesy and naive doo-wop fantasy while doing something grandiose like affecting societal change.

The track is representative of the changes happening around the world today, especially those hungry young people with stars in their eyes looking forward towards a brighter future. When you don't know the scope of what will be needed to affect change, it may well be easier to make those challenging first steps.

Fils-Aimé comments that we are living in an era where people don't wish to be burdened by extra emotional weight where there are “only good vibes allowed.” We should be accepting of everyone – depression, patriarchy and racism exists and we should not pretend that we live in a fictitious gated community where everyone walks around with a dog and a smile.

lyrics

I know you won’t let me down
I can tell by the vibe
That’s been round our house
I can tell you won’t let this go
By the spark in your eye
And the pep in your
Feet feet feet feet feet
Feet feet feet feet feet

I got some real questions to ask you now
Do you think we might change the world
One move at a time
I got some real blessing to share around
Having you by my side
Makes it all worth
While while while while while
We wait for the world to change
While while while while
We wait for the world to change
While while while while
We wait for the world to change

While we wait
For the world to change
While we’re hoping hoping hoping
While we’re hoping for the change
Being the change
Seeing the chains
While we’re hoping hoping changing

We could be the change
We could be the change
We might be the change

We could be the change
We can see the chains
We will be the change

We will be the change
